The Steady Swim

Slow, constant retrieve with a spinner, blade just ticking. Let current do the work in rivers; in lakes, keep it above the weed tops. The default — start here.

The Stop-and-Go

Three cranks, kill it, let the spoon flutter down, repeat. Trout shadow a lure for yards and commit when it 'escapes' or 'dies' in front of them.

The Countdown Jig

Cast, count down to depth — one foot per second — then jig with short rod-tip snaps as it swings. Depth beats speed when fish are glued to the bottom.

Field Notes — Six Rules

Tips from the sharp end

Silver on sun, gold on gray

Blade flash is your visibility dial. Bright conditions call for silver's sharp flash; overcast and stained water call for gold's warm glow. Black blades silhouette best at dawn and dusk.

Count it down

Lures sink roughly a foot per second. Cast, count — one, two, three — then retrieve. Fish the same fan of casts at three depths before you move. Trout often sit two feet deeper than you think.

The pause is the trigger

Kill your retrieve mid-swing and let the lure flutter. Seventy percent of strikes on spoons and crankbaits come on the pause or the first crank after it. Retrieve, pause, twitch, repeat.

Cast upstream, burn it down

In rivers, cast quartering upstream and retrieve just faster than the current. Your lure swims naturally past holding lies instead of dragging backwards against the flow — which trout read as wrong.

Fan the water like a clock

From any position, cast at 9 o'clock, then 10, 11, noon — covering every lane before you step forward. Shore anglers who fan-cast outfish boat anglers who bomb one direction.

Downsize when it's tough

Cold fronts, pressure, and clear water all shrink the menu. Drop from 1/4oz to 1/16oz spinners and watch follows turn into takes. When in doubt, go smaller and slower.
